Bill of Materials and Scedual

This week Leslie and I developed and narrowed down our ideas regarding the ants interaction (see also ICM final proposal).

The main plan for this week is to track the ants, using web camera, in order to accumulate data on their behavior. Observing them will assist us in drawing more ideas regarding the interaction. Therefore, before building their housing we will do a test in a wide plastic box. In order to do that we will have to put on the fringes of the box insect-barrier – Fluon (with the help of the ant’s lab at the Rockefeller university). This week I am also meeting Dr. Danny Reinberg from NYU who aims to establish the social insects ants as a model system for epigenetic research.

Questions:

  • Is it possible to built the surface on wich the ants walk on as an FSR?
  • We noticed that our ants react to a breeze. How can we create a breeze inside of their housing?

Absolutely. You can build your own force sensing surface pretty affordably.

You can start by drilling holes in different sections of the ant farm and cover those with mesh or make the holes small enough that the ants can’t get through. You can also attach a small computer fan to one of the sides with the holes in order to push air through.
